This thesis presents the design of a piezoelectric powered temperature sensor platform. The proposed sensor platform consists of a piezoelectric transducer, a power management circuit and a temperature sensor interface circuitry. The piezoelectric transducer mounted inside the shoe supplies the power required to operate the sensor platform circuitry through compression and relaxation of the foot. The power management circuit controls the charging and discharging of electrical energy to the temperature interface circuit, since the piezoelectric transducer does not produce enough power with a single compression and relaxation. The sensor interface circuit consists of an instrumentation amplifier, a bridge circuit with the resistive temperature sensor, and Bluetooth low energy (BLE) module which transmits the sensor information to the BLE dongle connected to a PC. The sensor platform including the piezoelectric transducer has been designed considering the energy requirement of 4.826mJ to transmit one packet of data that was obtained by experiment. Furthermore, a communication protocol including a PC GUI has been developed for transmitting the temperature sensor information. Finally, an experiment is carried out where the sensor platform is used to measure the temperature of the foot, and the PC GUI is used to display and store the temperature data received from the sensor platform. It is determined through the experiment that assuming one step per second, a person will have to walk 1.55mins to send the first packet of data and 1.10mins to the send the subsequent packet of data.
