DRIVING CYCLE OPTIMIZATION OF AN ELECTRIC CITY BUS NETWORK

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science, University of Akron, Electrical Engineering.
Hazardous impact of fossil fuel usage in transportation is forcing industry to improve environmentally-friendly transportation solutions. In this thesis, `opportunity charging’ (which means to charge the vehicle on every opportunity) city bus networks have been investigated. An electric vehicle model has been developed and simulated for energy consumption; a driving cycle optimization algorithm is developed to reduce the energy consumption by the EV and to use optimal charging time on each stop considering its impact on battery lifetime in respect to the bus schedule. The results are demonstrated in case studies. Proposed charging pattern (the opportunity charging) and the optimized driving cycle indicate that the overall cost of an electric bus network can be reduced significantly.
