Model Predictive Control of Five-Phase Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor.

The thesis presents a control system developed based on model predictive control (MPC) technique for a five-phase permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMaSynRM). The control system is designed in cascaded structure with a proportional-integral (PI) controller and the developed MPC. MPC is designed with the objective of minimizing torque error. The maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) condition is derived for a five-phase PMaSynRM and has been used to generate the reference currents. To take advantage of the fault-tolerant capability of five-phase PMaSynRM, the applicability of the developed controller for fault tolerant operation (FTO) has been investigated. A comprehensive analysis has been carried out along with Matlab simulations to verify the performance of the proposed MPC over a benchmark controller (modeled completely with PI controllers) for both healthy and faulty conditions. MPC performs better in fault scenario than the benchmark controller. The model used in MPC depends on motor parameters and they are susceptible to change due to environmental conditions. Therefore, a sensitivity analysis has been carried out and proved the resiliency of the controller for dynamic parameter variations. Initial experimental results are provided to validate the controller operation.
