COMPARATIVE STUDY OF INDUCTIVE WIRELESS POWER TRANSFER PAD TOPOLOGIES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science, University of Akron, Engineering.
Air gap variations and misalignments are inevitable in inductive wireless power transfer systems for electric vehicle (EV) charging application, and have significant impacts on the magnetic parameters, namely self-inductances, mutual inductance, and coupling coefficient of the power transfer pads. A comparative study is conducted of three power transfer pad topologies: circular-circular (CP-CP), rectangular-rectangular (RP-RP), and double D-double D (DD-DD) under air gap variations and horizontal misalignments. In addition, each pad topology has three sub-topologies, for which receiver pad is the same size as, larger than, or smaller than the transmitter pad. The self-inductances of transmitter and receiver are observed, and show insignificant variations under air gap variations and horizontal misalignments for topological and sub-topological configurations except for the sub-topologies of CP-CP topology, where the receiver is either larger or smaller than the transmitter pad. On the contrary, for every topology, the variations in mutual inductance and coupling coefficient depend strongly on the air gap and the horizontal misalignments. However, the DD- DD topology, for all of its sub-topologies, shows better misalignment tolerance than the other two topologies.
