Foreign Object Damage and Solid Particle Erosion Behavior of Ceramic Matrix Composites

Presby, Michael J

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Akron, Mechanical Engineering.
Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are an enabling propulsion material system due to their high temperature capability, high strength to weight ratio, and improved damage tolerance compared to monolithic ceramic materials. However, significant challenges exist regarding their successful implementation for hot-section aero-engine components. Due to their inherently brittle nature, CMCs are susceptible to severe damage and degradation resulting from impact by foreign objects, termed foreign object damage (FOD). CMCs are also prone to significant material removal and strength degradation resulting from the repeated/accumulative impingement of solid erosive particles termed erosion. As a result, this work investigates and characterizes the resistance of several gas-turbine grade CMCs as it relates to FOD and erosion.
