Synthesis, Characterization and High-throughput Screening of Photoiniferter/RAFT Agent for Well-controlled Radical Polymerization of Block Copolymers

This work evaluates the use of benzyl dodecyl trithiocarbonate (BDTC) as both a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent and photoiniferter in the polymerization of tert-butyl acrylate. Bulk polymerization initiated by UV irradiation was conducted, and its first order kinetic analysis shows BDTC enables a controlled polymerization. Molecular weights of >500,000 g/mol with relatively narrow molecular weight dispersities (Mw/Mn~1.2) were achieved with conversions higher than 60% (measured through quantitative NMR). BDTC and light initiation were also used to successfully synthesize poly(tert-butyl acrylate)-block-polystyrene in two step polymerization; high molecular weight (around 1,000,000 g/mol), and relatively narrow polydispersities (Mw/Mn~1.2) were obtained. Finally, 3D printed combinatorial high-throughput equipment has been designed. It is suitable for the RAFT polymerization to screen and identify the optimal dosages of the BDTC in RAFT polymerization process.
