The purpose of this research is to understand the effectiveness of commercially used corrosion inhibitors in reinforced concrete. In this study, we investigated 11 commonly used corrosion inhibitors at 10-4, 10-3, 10-2 and 10-1 concentrations using a simulated concrete pore solution (pH=12.8) without chlorides. To determine the performance of these inhibitors, we conducted open-circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Open-circuit potential gives us the information about the equilibrium potential at the electrode and solution interface based on which we conduct potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We used potentiodynamic polarization to obtain corrosion potential, corrosion current, corrosion rate and pitting potential. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to understand the passive film formation on the electrode surface and calculate the polarization resistance, corrosion rates. Corrosion rates obtained from potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to calculate the inhibition efficiency of the inhibitors. Furthermore, using the previous literature and the results obtained from the above-mentioned experiments, we analyzed the structures of these inhibitors to explain the best possible mechanism of corrosion inhibition.
