ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that influence Marriage and Family Therapists’ (MFTs’) comfort and the extent which they discuss sexual issues with the couples with whom they work. The sample of this study included a sample of marriage and family therapists (MFTSs) who are members of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). The results indicated that graduate training, supervision, and clinical experience were all found to be predictors of MFTs’ comfort with couples’ sexual issues. However, when the extent to which MFTs discuss couples’ sexual issues was examined, graduate training was found to be the best predictor of whether or not MFTs will discuss sexual issues with the couples with whom they work. These findings indicate that there is, indeed, a difference between sexual comfort and the extent to which sexual issues are discussed, a variable which was formerly referred to as the “willingness” variable. The findings of this study have implications for MFTs, MFT faculty, MFT supervisors, and those within the helping disciplines at large. The hope is that MFTs, MFT educators, MFT supervisors, and those in other helping fields will utilize the knowledge that was gleaned from this study to consider how more consistent training around sexual issues can continue to be integrated into MFT training and practice.
