Abstract
Macroions are charged macromolecules with the sizes between simple ions and colloids. The solution behaviour of macroions cannot be accurately described by classical Debye-Huckel or DLVO theory. The surrounding smaller counterions and co-ions play important roles in regulating the solution behaviour of macroions, as macroions interact with an environment of directly binding and diffuse background of counterions/co-ions in solutions. In dilute solutions, macroions with moderate charges can self-assembly into (in most cases) hollow, spherical, single-layered “blackberry”-type structures via counterion-mediated attraction, and co-ions can affect the self-assembly by specific ways. In this dissertation, the correlation between counterion/co-ion with macroions and the connection to the solution behaviour of macroions have been explored in 1) counterion radial distribution around macroions depending on macroion surface charge distribution and valency of the counterions 2) the interactions between co-ions and macroions that tune the self-recognition and self-assembly behaviour of macroions, and 3) how the sizes of co-ions determine interactions between macroions and co-ions.
