Polypropylene block copolymer synthesis by metathesis

Abstract Details

2021, Master of Science in Polymer Engineering, University of Akron, Polymer Science.
The goal of this research project was to develop methods for synthesizing polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) block copolymers (BCP) with non-living polymerization methods. Two methods of BCP synthesis were explored. First, various catalysts were used to synthesize polypropylene with alkene functional end groups. Combining these iPP and PE materials with a metathesis catalyst affords PE-iPP BCP. Also, a metathesis method was used to degrade poly(1,3-butadiene and propylene) random polymer (BD-r-iPP) in order to get telechelic iPP for use in multiblock copolymer synthesis. Characterization of the phenoxyimine catalyst and mono-polypropylene and BD-r-iPP through NMR spectroscopy and GPC was achieved.
