Unlike most small streams in and around the Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve of South West Colorado, Buck Creek is perennial and spring fed, while all others are ephemeral and primarily snowmelt fed. The purpose of the study was to determine why Buck Creek is perennial. Resistivities suggest an impermeable gneiss closer to the surface at the springs. A normal fault cutting through the impermeable gneiss could be responsible for lifting the gneiss closer to the surface in the region of the springs, creating a regional boundary responsible for forcing groundwater to discharge as fault springs midway down Buck Creek’s drainage basin. The piezometers showed the water table is sloping opposite to the surface allowing the groundwater to resurface as springs on the hill side. This groundwater is feeding the lower portion of Buck Creek, which allow the stream to flow year round.
