THE CREATION OF A GIS DATABASE AND THE DETERMINATION OF SLUDGE'S SPECTRAL SIGNATURE IN AN AGRICULTURAL SETTING

This study investigated Class B sewage sludge applications to agriculture in two rural counties in Northwest Ohio. For this study a GIS database was created, using ArcView, a GIS software package. One of the main shapefiles in the GIS database was the EPA permitted fields shapefile for Class B sewage sludge, with data going as far back as 1974. The GIS database also contained other shapefiles that helped to determine all the information that was needed to study Class B sewage sludge applications to winter wheat stubble and to backup the data that was derived from the LANDSAT 7 ETM+ (L7 ETM+) image. Only one date from a L7 ETM+ flyover, on July 28, 2004, was used as input for this study. This image was selected because it was known that the test field for this study had Class B sewage sludge splashed onto the winter wheat stubble on July 18, 2004. To help determine if Class B sewage sludge was spectrally unique a remote sensing software package called ERMapper was used. A K-means unsupervised classification was then run using L7 ETM+ bands 1-5 and 7 as input. The unsupervised classification correctly identified 17 parcels that were Class B sewage sludge. There were also other parcels that were found to be spectrally similar, like animal waste and commercial fertilizers. Also used for this study was a Field Spec Pro spectroradiometer, which was used to take the spectra of a Class B sewage sludge applied field and a no sludge applied field. These spectra helped determine the best L7 ETM+ bands to use to help discern Class B sewage sludge on the landscape. The L7 ETM+ bands, 1,3 and 5 in blue, green, and red wavelengths respectively helped to distinguish Class B sewage sludge from other fields with no Class B sewage sludge applications. Another band combination discovered is the non-reciprocal ratio combination of bands 7/5, 3/5, and 4/3 in the blue, green, and red wavelengths. These band combinations are recommended as the best L7 ETM+ bands to use when looking for Class B sewage sludge as determined from this study.
