Interparental conflict has been associated with adolescents’ romantic conflict behavior, especially for adolescents who negatively appraise their parents’ marital conflict (Kinsfogel & Grych, 2004; Simon & Furman, under review). What remains unknown is how cognition regarding parents’ marriage relates to behavior in romantic relationships. Guided by social information processing theory, the current study examined if conflict goals could be one such mechanism linking negative appraisals of interparental conflict with adolescents’ romantic conflict behavior. Participants include 382 late adolescent college students who completed measures of their negative appraisals of interparental conflict, conflict goals, and conflict behavior. Results indicated that conflict goals mediated associations between negative appraisals of interparental conflict and romantic conflict behavior. Overall, conflict goals appear to be a salient link in the association between appraisals of one’s parents’ marriage and one’s romantic conflict behavior. Implications for research on adolescent romantic relationships and social information processing theory are discussed.
