Reading is a necessary and critical skill one needs to develop to communicate effectively in today's highly advanced and ever changing society. It is imperative that teachers around the world understand the importance of literacy development for struggling readers and aim to better understand their students' individual needs and abilities. More specifically, it is important that teachers provide equal access to reading opportunities and make an effort to provide appropriate and interesting reading materials in the classroom setting. The purpose of this study was to determine the reading attitudes and interests of middle school students and to assess how well these interests were being met through the use of recreational reading practices in the classroom, as well as the available reading materials accessible to them in the classroom. A student reading survey was administered to middle school students in suburban elementary school classrooms in Northwest Ohio. A semi structured informal interview was conducted with the classroom teacher. This study identified three main findings that are of significance to literacy instruction in the middle school grades. First, there is a disconnect between student and teacher opinions on the effectiveness of classroom library materials meeting the reading interests of middle school students. Whereas teachers claim their classroom libraries are adequately supplied with a variety of materials that are engaging and of interest to students, students are claiming they are dissatisfied with the materials and tend to spend more of their time and efforts seeking reading materials from alternative sources. Second, students are showing interest in spending 30 or more minutes reading each day in school. This positive stance regarding reading needs to be encouraged by providing multiple opportunities for reading a variety of text. Lastly, there is a significant difference in how different teachers approach the use of classroom libraries. Each teacher maintains a different purpose for the classroom library and the role it plays in daily reading instruction, therefore playing a large role in students' reading experiences.
