Abstract Details

The current study investigated individual differences in boundary creation around communication/information technology use at work and nonwork and its association with internal work-nonwork interference. More specifically, it was hypothesized that bidirectional segmentation preference would be positively associated with boundary creation around communication/information technology use at home and work. Work role identification and nonwork role identification were expected to have a negative relationship with boundary creation around communication/information technology use at home and work respectively. Moreover, perceived work group norm on segmentation was tested as a moderator between these individual differences and boundary creation around communication/information technology use in both domains. Data were collected from 265 participants via online survey. The results indicated that bidirectional segmentation preference was positively related with boundary creation in both domains as predicted while there were mixed findings for role identifications. Contrary to expectations, there was no interaction effect of perceived work group norm on segmentation. It was also shown that creating impermeable boundaries around work and home was beneficial in experiencing less internal work-nonwork interference in both domains. Limitations and research implications are discussed.
