Abstract
Utilizing creative methods, like storytelling and visuals, is an abstract concept in corporate training. Many companies have not taken full advantage of visual techniques in the training process that are currently used in traditional learning settings. The objectives of this study were to: (1) Analyze the learning preferences of adults in the workplace; (2) Identify the potential for applying visual methodologies to corporate training programs; and (3) Determine if visuals increase an employee's engagement level. To complete this study, a mixed methods research approach was used. A combination of surveys (quantitative) and interviews (qualitative) were utilized to analyze adult learner preferences, the potential for using visuals in training, and the effects of visuals on employee engagement. The survey was sent to 278 participants with a response rate of 71.9%. Quantitative data were analyzed using statistical software. Results are provided using frequencies and significance tests. Interview responses were used to develop a trend analysis of the qualitative results, showing patterns in the participants' responses. The results of this study indicate that participants viewed visuals as an important part of learning, often leading to higher retention and engagement. As training evolves in the 21st century, it will be important to integrate visuals into traditional training materials in order to facilitate better retention and engagement of our workforce.
