This study examined how college students cope with varying types and levels of intimate partner hostility and aggression and how their different coping strategies are correlated with relationship variables (e.g., intention to end relationship, commitement) and with individual adjustment variables (e.g., depression and PTSD symptomolgy). Two-hundred and eighty-nine college students who reported that they were currently in a romantic relationship completed measures about how they cope with psychological and physical aggression by their partner. Correlational analyses indicated that participants use of some of the R/S coping methods were significantly correlated with PTSD symptomology, intentionality to leave the relationship, commitment levels, and secular forms of coping. Also, the more negative forms of R/S coping methods were correlated with both the more mild and severe forms of psychological and physical aggression. For the most part, with the exception of one R/S coping subscale, hierarchical regression analyses indicated that R/S coping did not uniquely predict psychological adjustment and relationship variables above secular coping methods. On the other hand, both positive and negative secular coping uniquely predicted several psychological adjustment and relationship variables above R/S coping subscales. This cross-sectional study is the first in a longitudinal study that examines how college-age adults' use of secular and religious/spiritual coping strategies is tied to psychological and physical aggression by their partner and personal adjustment.
