This thesis concentrates on three texts: Die Ausgesperrten (1980) by Elfriede Jelinek, Februarschatten (1984) by Elisabeth Reichart and Heldenplatz (1988) by Thomas Bernhard. The authors describe the trauma of the Austrian people who survived the Second World War and how this trauma affected their lives and the lives of their children. The thesis addresses the following questions: How is family - as an institution and in relation to other institutions that constitute Austrian society - depicted in these works? What is the relationship between family members and how is this represented? How do the characters in the texts understand or construct their identity? The primary texts are analyzed in close readings using a narratological approach. I reflect on the construction and representation of identity by considering theories developed by Jan Assmann, Sigmund Freud and Benedict Anderson. The stories in these texts take place in the 1950s through the 1980s in Austria and depict the lives of families that suffer under bad living conditions and also under the trauma that was created during the Second World War. My research focuses on the complicated relationships in these patriarchal families and analyzes the roots of their problems within the historical context of the Second Republic. The main characters in these three texts live under different conditions and struggle with different problems that thwart their attempts to develop an identity and a sense of belonging.
