Validating An Open-Ended Coping Measure For Adolescents Exposed To Trauma

Abstract Details

Research shows that anywhere between 14% to over 60% of youth are exposed to traumatic events (Alisic et al., 2011), and there is overwhelming evidence that children and adolescents experience great difficulties as a result of exposure to trauma (Armsworth & Holaday, 1993; Holt, Buckley, & Whelan, 2008; Suzuki, Poon, Papadopoulos, Kumary, & Cleare, 2014). Thus, researchers and clinicians have developed interventions to help youth cope with traumatic events. In the present study, I describe the development and initial psychometric qualities of a vignette-based coping measure designed as part of an evaluation of a school-based traumatic stressor intervention for adolescents. Results showed some differences among the open-ended responses generated for the measure. Additionally, the measure was compared to a validated, closed-ended coping questionnaire in order to assess its validity. Scores on the analogous coping categories on the open-ended measure and the closed-ended measure were not significantly correlated, however, a significant relationship was found between positive coping strategies.
