Looking for

Abstract Details

2019, Master of Music (MM), Bowling Green State University, Music Composition.
Looking for is an orchestral piece approximately seven and a half minutes in duration, consisting of piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets in Bb, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns in F, three trumpets in C, two tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, three percussionists, piano, harp, and strings. The title suggests that the strong but dubious emotional content of the work seeks, but never finds, ultimate resolution. Looking for is in binary form with no break between the two sections. The first section features a prominent melodic fragment 3-2[013] that is developed in the various instrumental forces of the orchestra. The melody gradually unfolds and longer lines slowly emerge. After the entire melody is exposed, solo lines played by different instruments become longer and more varied. The second section begins in the low register with a four-measure melody played by the contrabass or piano at a soft dynamic level. The same phrase is then repeated in the higher register as a gradually quickening tempo adds to the increasing tension. After the climax, the orchestra returns to the peaceful mood of the beginning utilizing a varied melodic fragment.
