Relationships Between the Expressed Goals For Education of Pre-Service Teachers and Other Selected Factors

Abstract Details

1974, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Bowling Green State University, Educational Administration and Supervision.
The design of the study made it possible: 1. to compare the expressed goals for education of pre-service teachers with the goals expressed by their parents, their non-college peers, their college peers in fields other than education, experienced teachers, and members of boards of education; 2. to compare the expressed goals for education of pre-service teachers with the goals manifested by them in actual classroom situations as observed by their cooperating teachers; 3. to compare the expressed goals for education of pre-service teachers when grouped according to sex, size of high school they attended, type of college they attend, and satisfaction with their own educations; and 4. to compare the scores of pre-service teachers who ranked particular goals for education high with the scores of those who ranked them low on the Eidell Measure of Pupil Control Ideology, the Neal-Seeman Powerlessness Scale, and subscales of the Personal Orientation Inventory. The sample consisted of fifty-two pre-service teachers from Bowling Green State University and forty-one from Heidelberg College, their parents, school board members from Northwestern Ohio, and non-college peers, college peers not in education, and experienced teachers selected by the pre-service teachers. Results of the study indicated that: 1. there were significant differences between the various groups on specific goals for education, but general agreement when the goal list was considered as a totality; 2. there were significant differences between the expressed and manifested behavior of the pre-service teachers; and 3. there were significant differences between the scores of pre-service teachers who ranked certain goals for education low and those who ranked them high on the dimensions of powerlessness and personal orientation. Recommendations were made for further research.
