Abstract Details

1975, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Bowling Green State University, Educational Administration and Supervision.
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between students' perceptions and principals' perceptions of the personality traits of selected Sixth grade teachers. The study considered the following possibilities: (1) Whether there are significant differences in the personality traits of successful teachers and less successful teachers when rated by principals and students. (2) Do successful teachers possess different personality traits than less successful teachers? (3) Do principals and students differ in their ratings of teachers? The sample consisted of students and principals from 56 elementary and middle schools in the State of Ohio. The sample was divided into a group of students and principals who rated the teachers as being successful and a group of students and principals who rated the teachers as being less successful. Thirty-one teachers were rated in the upper group (Q4) while 29 teachers were rated in the lower group (Q1). The data were collected by rating the teachers on the Inventory of Personality Traits (IPT) developed from the research of A. S. Barr and Arthur Combs. The IPT consists of 17 personality traits to be rated along a 5 point scale. A demographic data sheet was used to collect information on each teacher. The findings of the study indicated that the raters were unable to identify specific personality traits of either successful or less successful teachers. The respondents rated the successful teachers high on all 17 personality traits, and the less successful teachers low on all 17 personality traits. The successful teacher in this study was female, married, between 30-39 years of age with a bachelor's degree who had taught ten years or less. Recommendations were made regarding further research in this area.
