Abstract
This study was concerned with whether, in a particular judgment situation, different judges used different strategies, and to determine if these individual strategies were consistent across a series of three judgment situations, Four-statement profiles were constructed for judging faculty members, roommates, and universities. Profiles were constructed to isolate five judgment strategies: (1) conjunctive, (2) disjunctive, (3) discounting, (4) contrast, and (5) linear. After profile judgments were completed, cue (statement) usefulness indices were completed for each judge. The usefulness indices were compared to determine which strategy each judge used in each situation. Results indicated differences in individual judgment strategies within each judgment situation. Also greater reliance on low-valued information (more conjunctive strategies) was found in the faculty situation. The only strategy used consistently across the three situations was a linear strategy. Eight of 21 judges used this strategy in all situations, however, the other 13 judges used a linear strategy in one or two situations, but not consistently across all three. Findings for configural strategies were even more pronounced. None of the judges used the same configural strategy in all three situations. This result offers no support for consistency across situations. Overall, the conclusion was that different judges used different strategies, but use of these strategies was not consistent (particularly with configural strategies) across the three situations.
