An Appraisal of Practices and Policies in Intercollegiate Athletics in the Mid-American Conference Essential for Compliance with Title IX of the Educational Amendments of Nineteen Seventy Two (Public Law 92-318)

Abstract Details

1978, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Bowling Green State University, Educational Administration and Supervision.
Purpose:The purpose of the study was to examine the athletic programs of the ten universities comprising the Mid-American Conference in order to determine if practices and policies were being followed that would enable the universities to be judged in full compliance with Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-318). The deadline for compliance with Title IX is July 21, 1978. Procedure:A questionnaire was constructed to measure the perceptions and opinions of the respondents toward Title IX compliance at their institutions. The questionnaire was administered to thirteen individuals at each institution. The data were tabulated using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and the results applied to a table that indicated various levels of compliance. Findings: The findings indicated that Title IX compliance at Miami and Northern Illinois was rated at moderate. Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan were all judged to be in substantial compliance with Title IX. The athletic directors rated their athletic programs in full compliance in five institutions, substantial compliance in three institutions and moderate compliance in two institutions. The affirmative action officer's ratings were generally lower and tended to be similar to the ratings by the women's coaches and administrators. Conclusions:It appears that all universities are moving toward full compliance with Title IX. It seems doubtful, however, if this can be accomplished before the deadline of July 21, 1978. The women administrators and coaches consistently judged their athletic programs lower in compliance than the males. The results of this study can be beneficial to university administrators examining their athletic programs compliance with Title IX regulations.
