Abstract
This collection of previously unpublished articles was solicited, chosen, copy-edited, and arranged to depict the interaction of American magazines and the American people in the years 1890-1950. The major essay uses a historical-technological perspective to trace developments in American magazines which resulted from new technologies, especially pulp paper processes, photo-engraving, and offset printing, with subsequent changing relationships between periodicals and the public. The primary purpose of the anthology is to present American magazines as both mirrors and molders of American society. The articles are presented in five sections. Section One includes the Schmidt essay, "Magazines, Technology, and American Culture," and "An Economic Perspective on Formula in Popular Culture" by David Paul Nord. Section Two includes "The Germ Threat as Seen in Magazine Articles, 1890-1920" by Andrew Mcclary, "Women for War Work: The OWI and Magazines in WW II" by Maureen Honey, and "The Manliness Ethos in Modern America" by David G. Pugh. Section Three contains "Will Rogers' 'Letters of a Self-Made Diplomat to his President" by Peter C. Rollins, "Life's View of Victoria, 1883-1901" by Patricia Marks, and "Anglo-American Conflict in the Popular Media during the 1920s" by David Richards. Section Four has "The Writer and his Middle-Class Audience: Frank Norris" by Robert A. Morace, "Sentimental Short Fiction by Women in Leslie's Popular Monthly" by Donna Casella-Kern, "The Brandywine School and Magazine Illustration" by James J. Best, and "Harris Merton Lyon's Short Stories" by Thomas Rees. Section Five includes "Commentary and the American Jewish Intellectual Experience" by Milton S. Katz, "The American Woman Suffrage Press" by Lynn Masel-Walters, and "The History of Charlton Press and Its Song Lyric Periodicals" by Mary Slezak. A selected bibliography for the study of magazines in American culture is included.
