Security Measures and School Dropout: A Test of Two Competing Theories

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Arts (MA), Bowling Green State University, Sociology.
With the increasing concern surrounding school violence, there has been a call by students, parents and administrators for more security measures in schools. Emerging research has highlighted a number of negative consequences of school security on student outcomes, including increased victimization, decreased self-esteem, and a deterioration of the broader school climate. Yet, longitudinal studies connecting school security to academic outcomes are sparse. In this study, two competing criminological theories – general strain theory and social control theory – are examined to determine the effect of security measures on the likelihood of high school students dropping out. Using nationally representative data from waves 1 and 2 of the Educational Longitudinal Survey (2002), a mixed-effects model is used to examine this relationship. Findings indicate that mixed support is found for both hypotheses. First, both security and lower perceptions of safety are associated with higher odds of dropout. Second, the association between security and dropout is moderated by the involvement aspect of social bonds. Support for both hypotheses stresses the need for a multi-theoretical approach in examining the effects of school security on students.
