Penalties of Sleep is a collection of poems that explores the consequences of events, genetics and relationships that one can’t control just as one can’t control what one’s brain does while sleeping. This thesis explores trauma from childhood that the speaker can’t control, such as poverty, sexual abuse and being raised by an addict. It also explores trauma from adulthood that the speaker can’t control, such as physical illness and mental illness. These topics being discussed in tandem with one another results in a psychological portrait of the speaker that is present in each one of these poems. However, it’s not just a psychological portrait of the speaker at just any moment of their life, it’s at a moment of their life when they are sorting through their trauma in hopes of understanding the source of their pain and moving forward in life, which constitutes the speaker once again connecting with others as well as their own body. This collection of poems is a portrait of someone who feels so vulnerable while being awake because of the uncontrollable consequences in their life, that they might as well be asleep while the world acts upon them rather than them acting upon the world. The organization of these poems is associative in nature because of the associative nature of sorting through one’s memories. In this sense, each poem triggers the next.
