Female Orgasm and Women's Sexual Regret in the Context of One-Time Sexual Encounters

Abstract Details

2022, Master of Science (MS), Bowling Green State University, Psychology/Clinical.
Theories in evolutionary psychology posit that orgasm in women may indicate that their sexual partner is of high quality, and thus would make for a good long-term mate. Based off past research and evolutionary psychology, there is reason to believe orgasm may lead to experienced sexual regret in one-time sexual encounters where the woman does not hear from their sexual partner after having had sex. The present study was conducted to explore the degree to which orgasm impacts sexual regret, in addition to other variables of interest: sexual satisfaction, positive emotions, negative emotions, partner characteristics, and desire for a long-term relationship. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk was used to recruit women (N = 223) aged 18-34 who had, within the previous 12 months, consensually engaged in a one-time sexual encounter with a man after which she never heard from him again. Contrary to the prediction of the current study, results indicated that those who had an orgasm reported similar levels of regret, more positive emotions, and less negative emotions. Results supported the prediction that women who had an orgasm reported greater desire for a long-term relationship. Correlations revealed that both disgust and worry were associated with more sexual regret. Greater use of both alcohol and drugs as well as more positive attitudes toward casual sex were associated with less regret. Orgasm and sexual satisfaction were very strongly, and positively correlated. Collectively, these results suggest that the role of orgasm in one-time sexual encounters is complex and warrants future study.
