A model of cumulative creep-fatigue damage has been developed which is based on the use of damage curve equations to describe the evolution of creep-fatigue damage for four basic creep-fatigue cycle types. These cycle types correspond to the four fundamental cycles of the StrainRange Partitioning Life Prediction approach of Manson, Halford and Hirschberg. A concept referred to as Damage Coupling is introduced to analytically account for the differences in the nature of the damage introduced by each cycle type, and to provide a means of tracking the cumulative damage which accrues in complex loading histories composed of the fundamental cycle types. These concepts are synthesized into a general framework for the treatment of cumulative creep-fatigue damage problems. To make application of this model, the cumulative creep-fatigue damage behavior of 316 S.S. at 1500°F has been experimentally established for the two-level loading cases involving fatigue and creep-fatigue, in various permutations. These tests were conducted such that the lower life (high strain) cycling was applied first, for a controlled number of cycles, and the higher life (lower strain) cycling was applied at the second level, to failure. With the exception of the tensile-hold cycle followed by fully reversed cycling results, the proposed model correlates the observed cumulative creep-fatigue behavior considerably well. For the loading sequence which was not well correlated, the model provides a lower bound for the observed behavior.
