The purpose of this work was to investigate the mechanism underlying the non-linear viscoelastic behavior of silica reinforced silicone rubber. The focus of the work was on dynamic modulus measurements as a function of strain amplitude with a broad scope of experimentation. Many areas were investigated such as; silica surface area, silica surface treatment, polymer molecular weight, crosslink density, silica volume fraction, and strain history of the test specimens. A model was developed for the correction of dynamic modulus data generated using the cyclindrical torsion test geometry so as to eliminate the error due to the non-uniform strain field in the specimen. A new phenomenon was discovered where the recovery of the dynamic modulus from a previous strain history is markedly accelerated by cycling the test specimen during the recovery period. The dynamic modulus corresponding to a dynamic deformation superimposed on a static deformation was shown to be invariant to the magnitude of the static deformation. Swelling of a test specimen in solvent prior to testing was shown to eliminate the dependence of the dynamic modulus on strain. The normal behavior was shown to reappear in the specimen after the solvent w as removed. The dynamic modulus at low strain was found to depend on the peroxide used to crosslink the material in contrast to the dynamic modulus at high strain which depends only on the crosslink density and not the peroxide. All of the data are interpreted collectively in terms of a physical picture whereby the behavior is due to the behavior of the polymer phase as modified by the presence of the silica. The mechanism is envisioned to be interaction between silica particles through entanglements in the polymer phase. This mechanism is consistent with nearly all of the phenomena investigated in this work.
