The current study examined the temperament trait of activity level in six and nine month old infants in relation to later cognitive abilities. A comprehensive examination of activity level included parental and trained observer report, and laboratory assessment of 106 infants. Infant information processing was assessed using the Fagan Test of Infant Intelligence and the Ruff block task. Intelligence scores were obtained on 88 parents as assessed by the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test; midparent scores were used as a proxy for the infant's eventual score. A general factor of activity level emerged from exploratory factor analysis. An item analysis of activity level measures indicated that distinct sub-types of activity level could be identified. The potential to tap these sub-types of activity varied with the instrument used. Six and nine month activity level may be rated in distinct ways as well. The global measure of activity level was not related to cognitive abilities at any measurement point. Concurrent measures of activity level and information processing were not significantly correlated. The activity dimension of engagement with the environment was significantly related to later verbal abilities. Measures of simple motoric activity and energy level, however, were not related to cognitive abilities..
