Development of a Microfabricated Sensor Array for Oil Evaluation

Abstract Details

2005, Doctor of Philosophy, Case Western Reserve University, Chemical Engineering.
A thin film electrochemical sensor array to measure the remaining useful life (RUL) of engine oil was designed, fabricated and tested. Two approaches were used to minimize the effect of the large resistivity of the engine oil. The first approach was to use the non-steady state measurements instead of the traditional steady state electrochemical methods. The second approach was to use microfabrication techniques to construct a sensor array of reduced size, so that the resistances could be reduced as the gap between the electrodes were reduced. The sensor array used in this study contained 5 sensing elements. It consisted of a pair of interdigitated platinum electrodes for AC Impedance measurement, a platinum resistant temperature detector (RTD), a palladium-palladium oxide total acid number (TAN) sensor, a two-electrode electrochemical sensor and a pair of interdigitated gold electrodes for dielectric constant measurement. All these sensing elements were deposited on a highly polished alumina substrate and were produced by thin film sputtering technique. Three of the five sensing elements were selected to be used for oil condition evaluations. The three properties measured and evaluated were AC impedance, TAN and temperature. The oil samples tested in this study were prepared by industry standard engine tests, such as Mack T-8 and Sequence IIIF tests.
