Positive Cognitions and their Role in Depression, Hopelessness, and Suicidal Ideation

Abstract Details

2010, Master of Arts, Case Western Reserve University, Psychology.
Positive cognitions play a significant role in the experience and recovery from depression. The Coping Attitudes Scale (CAS) is a rationally derived measure of positive cognitions. The CAS contains statements reflective of coping attitudes along five domains: Life Perspective, Personal Accomplishment, Positive Future, Self-Worth, and Coping with Problems. The current study demonstrated the validity of the CAS in psychiatric outpatients and college students. Level of depression was significantly associated with Coping with Problems, Life Perspective, and Self-Worth. Positive Future was significantly related to hopelessness. Degree of suicidal ideation was significantly related to Self-worth and Life Perspective in psychiatric outpatients and Coping with Problems in college students. The five factors overlap highly and are likely related to one underlying construct of positive thinking which is strongly related to depression and hopelessness. The CAS can be used to establish a patient’s baseline of positive thinking and to monitor progress in treatment.
