Abstract Details

2010, Master of Arts, Case Western Reserve University, Psychology.
Pretend play is an essential part of childhood development and adjustment. However, parents, teachers, and researchers debate the function of aggression in pretend play. The current study examined pretend play, classroom behavior, and parenting style in a normal preschool population. There were 67 child participants and the measures included an observation of pretend play, parent rating scales of parenting style, and teacher rating scales of classroom behavior. Results were that play skills were positively associated with prosocial behavior in the classroom and negatively associated with physical aggression in the classroom, as rated by teachers. In particular, expression of oral aggression related to positive behavior in the classroom. Controlling or permissive parenting styles were negatively related to prosocial behavior in the classroom, inhibitory control, and acceptance by same-sex peers. Controlling and permissive parenting styles also were related to constricted affect in play. Implications for parents and teachers are discussed.
