Effects of Extreme Prematurity on Domains of Executive Function in a Kindergarten Sample

Orchinik, Leah J.

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, Case Western Reserve University, Psychology.
The current study used four measures of executive functioning to assess the effect of EP on these domains and examine associations of outcomes in the EP group with neonatal risk factors. Another aim was to conduct exploratory analyses using outcome variables that were created to isolate components of EF. Findings revealed that the EP group performed more poorly than the term group on all outcome measures, and on a few of the tasks after controlling for crystallized intelligence. Some neonatal complications predicted poorer EF after accounting for background and environmental characteristics. The findings suggest pervasive cognitive deficits in children with EP at school entry, raise the possibility of select deficits in certain domains of EF, show that EF are related to the degree of neonatal risk, and demonstrate deficits in children with EP on measure that assess specific aspects of EF.
