EVOLUTION OF THE DESIGN AND MODELING OF THE EAGLE SYSTEM

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Sciences (Engineering), Case Western Reserve University, EMC - Aerospace Engineering.
The dynamical modeling of an airborne wind energy system, EAGLE System, is demonstrated for both a two dimensional longitudinal model and a rigorous three dimensional model. The Electrical Airborne Generator with a Light-than-air Eolian (EAGLE) System is a novel airborne wind energy system which improves upon current airborne wind energy systems by expanding the range of operational wind speeds and decoupling the lift generation process from the energy collection process. The wind energy is collected using a novel counter rotating double speed generator designed to both reduce net angular momentum as well as weight. The two dimensional model simplifies aspects of the dynamics to ease an initial controller design but discusses weight and stability considerations. The three dimensional model is a physically rigorous model of the system that accounts for wind speeds in all three directions. Briefly, simulation results and the future of the EAGLE project are discussed. The work from the EAGLE System has resulted in two accepted papers [22] and [25], two papers currently under review [27] and [28], and a provisional patent [7].
