Intolerance of Uncertainty, Anxiety and Worry in Response to a Novel Induction of Uncertainty

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, Case Western Reserve University, Psychology.
Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is the tendency to react negatively on an emotional, cognitive, and behavioral level to uncertain situations (Dugas, Buhr, Ladouceur, 2004). IU is theorized to be one of the cornerstones of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Various methods have been used to manipulate uncertainty, but the validity of these methods has not been ideal. The purpose of the current study was to use ambiguous scenarios to induce uncertainty and to examine changes in state anxiety, worry, and uncertainty in selected samples of individuals high and low in anxiety. Results revealed main effects of time, indicating that the scenarios were effective in increasing uncertainty, anxiety and worry from pre to post manipulation. Furthermore, there was an effect of condition for post scenario anxiety. There were no main effects of group and no significant interactions. Results are outlined and implications are discussed.
