Abstract
The OR-MIMI (Operating Room - Multi-Modality Multi-Resource Information Integration) system, a collaborative effort between Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Medical Informatics Division and the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC), aims to provide one single software system for the Department of Anesthesiology (also expandable to Perioperative Nursing, ancillary staff and other hospital Departments) to improve the efficiency of Anesthesiology personnel scheduling related tasks. OR-MIMI is essentially a department personnel management system designed and integrated to meet the needs of a complex, dynamic clinical environment. This thesis focuses on the system design and prototyping of OR-MIMI. OR-MIMI is designed to be a web application based on Ruby on Rails web framework and the other MIMI systems (Physio-MIMI and Ca-MIMI). The database table design focuses on how to make inter-module information sharing efficient. The prototype implementation of OR-MIMI includes two related parts: (1) migrate the department’s existing and isolated personnel management systems into one single system OR-MIMI; and (2) based on that, integrate information from all those systems to provide a more efficient, accurate, user-friendly new system to perform Anesthesiology personnel scheduling and management related tasks. The core functional module of OR-MIMI is the Electronic Magnet Board. E-Magnet-Board is the electronic version of the physical “Magnet Board” being used in the Department of Anesthesiology. It will be used every day to create, manage and publish the daily OR schedules.
