Fatigue testing is a well – established method for determining the mechanical properties of materials subjected to repeated loading. Stress fractures in cortical bone are a clinically recognized public health concern, believed to result from cyclic loading. There is currently no cost – effective device that accounts for the variety of factors influencing the fatigue behavior of bone in vivo. The FAST Machine, a constant stress amplitude rotating bending fatigue test designed in accordance with the design process, is proposed as a possible solution. Bovine cortical bone specimens designed and machined with reference to ASTM standards were fatigued. The results were determined to be in accordance with the expected fatigue and fracture patterns reported in current literature. The FAST Machine was also found to be affordable at a component cost of $2,150 and applicable to the testing of materials in research areas other than the study of cortical bone.
