DATA CAPTURE AND REPORT IN EPILEPSY MONITORING UNIT

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, EECS - Computer and Information Sciences.
The widespread use of paper or document-based forms for capturing patient information in various clinical settings, for example in epilepsy centers, is a critical barrier for large-scale, multi-center research studies that require interoperable, consistent, and high-quality data collection. To address this challenge, OPIC, an Ontology-driven Patient Information Capture system will be presented in this thesis. OPIC uses a domain-specific epilepsy and seizure ontology (EpSO) to support structured entry of multi-modal epilepsy data as well as proactively ensure quality of data through use of ontology terms in drop-down menus. The current version of OPIC has been deployed and used at The University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and will be deployed in three participating Epilepsy Monitoring Units in the United States and the United Kingdom. A preliminary user evaluation has been performed and indicated that OPIC has successfully met the design objective in easing the burden of clinical report data entry and making the data immediately available for secondary use.
