DISPERSION OF CARBON NANOTUBE CLUSTERS VIA THE RAPID VAPORIZATION OF INTERSTITIAL LIQUID

Carbon nanotube agglomerates are extremely difficult to disperse, which leads to difficulty in accessing the extraordinary physical properties of the carbon nanotubes themselves. A new technique for dispersing agglomerated fillers was studied, interstitial solvent vaporization (ISV). ISV is the use of a low boiling point solvent, such as water or acetone, inside the agglomerate itself. When the solvent-soaked agglomerate is placed into a bath of hot polymer, the solvent is caused to vaporize extremely rapidly, and the sudden increase in internal pressure destroys the agglomerate. Several solvents were examined as candidates for this process, and optical and electron microscopy techniques were developed for the characterization of carbon nanotube agglomerates after having undergone the ISV process, including pre- and post-process examination of single agglomerates. Comparisons of ISV with shear mixing and sonication were also performed, and ISV was shown to be at least of comparable effectiveness at decreasing average agglomerate size.
