Small Scale Production of Nitinol through Vacuum Arc Melting and Indirect Extrusion

Small scale production of equiatomic NiTi through vacuum arc-melting and indirect extrusion was demonstrated. A vacuum arc-melting and casting procedure was developed for production of near-net shape NiTi ingots that minimized C, N and O contamination. Microstructural changes from vacuum arc-casting were documented. A procedure for extrusion and re-extrusion of as-received and vacuum arc-cast NiTi billets was developed and guided by using Vickers hot hardness experiments. The vacuum arc-cast and as-received NiTi billets were extruded and re-extruded at 815°C with an extrusion ratio of 4 to 1. The effects of extrusion and re-extrusion on microstructure were analyzed in the longitudinal and transverse cross-sections of the extrudates. Similarly, the effects of vacuum thermal exposures to 900°C on the as-received, vacuum arc-cast, extruded and re-extruded NiTi samples were analyzed. The results of vacuum arc-melting and indirect extrusion method, serves to optimize the melting, casting and extrusion process parameters.
