Evaluating the Correlation Coefficient of Bivariate Failure Times: A Copula-based Approach

The association of bivariate failure times, estimated using Spearman’s correlation coefficient (Spearman’s rs) herein, is of great interest in biology and medicine. Our objectives are 1) to estimate the Spearman’s rs of two treatment periods (initial radiation therapy and salvage surgery after failure of initial radiotherapy) for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients; 2) to investigate the association of bivariate failure data through extensive Monte Carlo simulations using a copula approach. Frank-based estimate for HNSCC study is 0.36 with 95% confidence interval of (0.04, 0.64). Four copula-based estimates range from 0.13 to 0.36 suggesting a moderate positive association. Simulation results show that 1) Gumbel-based estimation procedure is more robust when censoring increases; 2) for Frank, Gumbel and Clayton-based estimation procedures under 0%, 30% and 60% of censoring, the accuracy increase with a stronger positive association when the copula assumption we made is the same as the true one.
