A Study Named Desire: How Global Versus Local Attentional Focus Priming Alter Approach Motivation for Desserts

Highly motivating emotions, like desire, cause attentional narrowing (localization) (Gable & Harmon-Jones, 2008; Juergensen & Demaree, 2015). This study examined whether the reciprocal relationship exists. That is, does narrowing attention increase desire? To assess this, the author investigated the effects of global versus local attentional focus priming on implicit approach-motivation and self-reported desire in a healthy, undergraduate population. Approach movement data and desirability ratings for appetitive dessert and neutral images were collected from 80 Introductory Psychology students. Findings support a bidirectional relationship: in comparison to global attentional focus, participants primed with local attentional focus demonstrated increased implicit approach motivation to desirable desserts on an Approach Avoidance Task (AAT). Despite relative increased approach motivation for desserts, participants with localized attention did not subjectively rate desserts as more desirable than participants with global attention. Increased desirability is evidenced at an implicit level: participants may not be aware of appetitive images’ increased desirability.
