Abstract Details

2017, Master of Sciences (Engineering), Case Western Reserve University, EECS - Electrical Engineering.
A permanent magnet with a strong, uniform field is constructed and used to enhance NQR signal by cross-polarisation energy transfer from 1H to 14N. Use of a computer control system allows for robust control of a linear actuator to move samples between the permanent magnet and a probe coil in zero field. A broadband transmitter and receiver is used for arbitrary selection of ¿Q without re-tuning of a matching network between experiments. Results are in good agreement with the literature and show improved NQR signal and high reliability for long term experiments with minimal operator interaction. The applications which are the focus of this work are humanitarian, the goal being to produce useful research pertinent to the identification of counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs and counterfeit supplements, of which many go unnoticed and unknown by the general public. Potential applications and research scope are discussed in the context of experimental results.
