Fire science is one of the important research fields since it concerns with people’s safety in the daily life. The main research topic of fire science is about flame retardant which could reduce fire damage and minimize devastating impacts on people and environment. Fire researchers are seeking new types of flame retardants that could replace traditional halogenated flame retardants which can cause secondary damage due to the toxic gas during burning. Benzoxazine is well known as a low flammable and highly thermally stable material, and it is seen as a good potential candidate for making flame retardants. In this work, a thiazole substituted monofunctional benzoxazine (PH-at) is synthesized and studied polymerization, thermal properties and flammability in its polymeric form. PH-at showed a surprisingly high anti-flammability property that is attractive for continuing further research on coating a PH-at/laponite nanocomposite with high nanofiller content on polyurethane (PU) foam as a flame retardant. Cone calorimetry test is utilized for studying the flammability of PH-at/laponite nanocomposite coated PU foam and a great reduction of flammability is observed.In addition to studying non-intercalated PH-at/laponite nanocomposite, an intercalated nanocomposite made of treated laponite/casein is analyzed as well. The treated laponite is modified by a cationic benzoxazine surfactant which achieves the intercalation of laponite.The benzoxazine surfactant modified clay/casein nanocomposite coating shows little improvement of flame retardancy.
