Personal Data Attic as Alternative to Public Cloud

Abstract Details

, Master of Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, EECS - Computer and Information Sciences.
In this thesis we explore an alternative for a user who does not wish to relinquish his or her data to a cloud service provider. We propose the data attic: a storage server that can be installed on a user's premises. A data attic user may grant access to institutions such as medical providers whose software could automatically save patients' information to the patient's own data attic, allowing the patient to share medical information among all healthcare facilities he or she accesses and to assemble the medical records from all those providers in one place, under the patient's control. We provide a prototype data attic server, data attic client, and a C library used to recompile existing C programs, retrofitting them to store data on a data attic. We run performance tests that show the data attic is a viable approach that does not present insurmountable implementation or performance challenges.
