Abstract
Stimuli-responsive behavior, as one of the most fundamental characteristics of life, can be found in almost all organisms. Inspired by living systems, tremendous work has been dedicated to impart similar adaptive behavior to synthetic small molecule and composites. Making use of fundamental organic chemistry reactions and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies, scientists are able to improve the performance of stimuli-responsivity, facilitate manufacturing, decrease costs, and thus lay a solid foundation for the widespread application of stimuli-responsive, “smart” materials. The aim of this work is to combine fundamental materials chemistry with novel fabrication techniques for the access and understanding of stimuli-responsive composites and their applications. In doing so, Pickering emulsion-templated encapsulation, 3D printing techniques, and thin film fabrication techniques were utilized during stimuli-responsive composites manufacturing. The work described herein include three major directions: 1) graphene oxide stabilized fluorocarbon gas bubbles as biomedical imaging contrast agent, 2) conductive elastomer as motion and gas sensor, and 3) stimuli-responsive polymer composite films for optical data storage. This demonstrated that stimuli-responsive materials are excellent for use in such applications as signal transduction, data acquisition, and information storage. The work reported herein not only provides insight into the design and preparation of new smart materials, but also helps establish structure-property application relationships for other future and advanced applications.
