A Classification and Visualization System for Lower-Limb Activities Analysis With Musculoskeletal Modeling

Abstract Details

2020, Master of Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, EECS - Computer and Information Sciences.
Lower-limb activities are frequently performed in human's daily life. In this paper, a classification and visualization system for lower-limb activity analysis is proposed. Different types of lower-limb activities can be monitored and analyzed, including muscle activities, locomotion modes, and balance control ability. The system contains three parts: data acquisition, modeling, and visualization. Wearable Gait Lab system (WGL) and Balance Test system are used to collect plantar pressure data and acceleration data. A reinforcement learning model is trained to imitate the walking patterns of the subject on the musculoskeletal model, which can help to analyze the muscle activities when the subject is walking. The plantar pressure data collected from Wearable Gait Lab were used to recognize the locomotion modes of the subjects. Balance control ability can also be successfully assessed based on a balance parameter, Center of Pressure (CoP), in balance tests. Balance control ability between able-bodied subjects and amputees are compared. The experiments show the promising and stable performance of walk imitation and locomotion modes recognition. Weaker balance control on the amputee can also be found compared to able-bodied subjects. Muscle activities, locomotion modes, and balance control are useful information in preventing injuries and secondary impairments.
