A major initiative of the biorobotics community involves using sensor networks to mirror core biological functions and processes. In this thesis, a synthetic nervous system is used to communicate in a closed loop with a robotic fixture to model insect motion vision processing. A Pi Camera connected to a Raspberry Pi in the robotic fixture streams images in real-time into the neural network which in turn determines the speed and direction of the background and any targets in its field of view. The robot then rotates the camera to cancel the movement of the visual background while also tracking any landmarks in its field of view. This is all performed successfully in real time between the synthetic nervous system and the robot. This project stands to be the basis for a robotic visual system and can be interfaced with any robot controller, neural or otherwise.
